Hello Pre-K parents,
Last week in our classroom we wrapped up our families and communities unit by learning all about community helpers. We read the story Career Day and learned about a lot of different special jobs people have in a community. The kids talked about some of the jobs that they might like to have when they grow up as well. We talked about some of the different tools that are needed for different jobs and the kids played a community helpers guessing game where they listened to clues about different jobs and had to guess what the job was. We ended the week by reading When I Grow Up and the kids thought about what jobs they would like to have. We made a self portrait to show the different jobs they wanted to have by adding tools and clothing that is needed for the job they picked. For religion this week, the kids heard the story of The Good Shepherd. They learned that a shepherd is someone who takes care of sheep. The good shepherd in the story looked everywhere for his lost sheep and did not stop looking until he found it. We heard that the shepherd was so happy when he finally found his lost sheep that he wanted to celebrate. We talked about how just like the shepherd from the story took such good care of his sheep, Jesus takes care of us and he is our good shepherd. We also talked about the people in our own lives that care for us as well. In our small groups we worked on a lot of different skills. We’ve been focusing on blending compound and multisyllabic words. The kids learned a hand motion to help them say and separate the parts of a word and then blend them back together to say the whole word. We also worked on writing diagonal and circle lines and rhyming words as well. We worked on color words during calendar time this week and so the kids participated in two color games to work on identifying colors. We also learned two new pattern types and practiced making patterns. Lastly, we made a community map after talking about all the different places we may see in a community. In our journals this week we worked on writing squares, rectangles, and triangles and ended the week by making a shape collage using all the different shapes we have learned how to make. Next week we will begin working on cutting skills in our fine motor journals. We also had a lot of fun making props for our pumpkin patch dramatic play center! We will be hearing some classic tales the next couple of weeks before we begin our new literacy unit. Next week we will hear The Lion and the Mouse and The Country Mouse and City Mouse. We also will finish up our religion chapter on the good shepherd. Enjoy the rest of your Sunday and have a great week! Miss Cordier and Ms. Douglas
